My only real criticism of this book is that it over-simplifies some of the historical figures. The reader will gain a working vocabulary and a base from which future study in metaphysics will be greatly aided. Excellent introduction; I’ve yet to be dissatisfied with Routledge’s Contemporary Introduction, a super readable work. Loux begins by explaining the nature of metaphysics as ontology, after which the book goes on to give detailed accounts of the problem of universals in two chaptersproblems involving the nature of concrete particulars, propositions, possible worlds and modality, and finally the problem of identity over time.
